Dorie can see the smoke coming up. Itâs just like Gramp burning. But itâs Luke Price. They lied but she knows. She saw the trailer. They drove down there with him.
Someoneâs knocking. It better not be Tom again. Dorie looks and she nearly pees herself. Itâs a church lady! Dorie shouts that Cam and Wes went out.
âIâll come in, then, Dorie, might I? I have some good news. Iâll come in now and we can have a chat. Would that be all right?â
The voice is sweet as pie but itâs fake. The screen door opens and then the lady is right there with Dorie in the sitting room. Sheâs the fat one.
âThey left you alone here, did they? Well, thatâs just a crime. May I sit with you? Come on now, come sit beside me and Iâll tell you a secret.â
The lady plops her bum down on the sofa like sheâs all set for fun.
Dorie wonât look at her. âYou smell.â
âI what?â
âSMELL.â
The lady stares at her. âDo you know what, Dorie? You smell too. You smell dirty, like you need to wash. And thatâs only one thing you need that you donât get in this house, just a proper bath. Aside from all the other things.â
âI hate baths. I really hate them.â
âWe can change that.â
âNo you canât. No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no ââ
âStop that.â
ââ no no no no no no no no no no no no no no NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.â
âAre you done?â
âYou smell like COW POO.â
âIf I was your mommy, Iâd turn you right over my knee and spank you.â
âNo oneâs my mommy.â
âThatâs not true. Now stop your silliness and listen to me. Childrenâs Aid is trying to find your natural parents, your real mommy and daddy who have an obligation to support you. We found your father, Dorie. Mr. Luke T. Price, in Toronto.â
âHeâs dead.â
The lady is quiet a moment. âWho told you that?â
âDunno. No one.â
âYou made it up. Well, thatâs called lying and it has to stop. You know what I think, Dorie? I think you are a good girl, a smart girl, who pretends to be wild and bad so you can get what you want.â
âYou can go now. I wanna watch TV.â
âWhy donât you tell me the real story about Kyle. The truth.â
Dorie is quiet.
âThat Kyle nonsense in the barn is the result of this household. Thatâs just a fact. The shameless display of you, a young girl, to naive, susceptible boys who ââ
âGO AWAY.â
âI could take you with me. I could take you right now.â
âFATTY, WHYâRE YOU SO FAT, DID YOU EAT A HORSE?â
Dorie looks right at the ladyâs face and the lady looks back with her mouth all twisted. She gets off the sofa and goes outside.
Then she comes right back in again and says, âAre they out there, in the field?â
âNO.â
âThey are. Somethingâs burning.â
